RED Episode #22: Gasparilla Half and Treasured Chest Challenge

Special thanks to our sponsor, Health I.Q.!  Health I.Q. celebrates the healthy choices people make by helping them find lower rates on life insurance.  If you are a weightlifter, swimmer, yogi, runner, or cyclist, you could get rewarded for the healthy lifestyle you are living.  For more information and to see if you qualify, go to www.healthiq.com/red or mention the promo code RED when you talk to a Health I.Q. agent at 1 (800) 549-1664.  A big thank you to them for sponsoring this week's show.

RUN

Last weekend, we participated in the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic.  The PGDC in Tampa, Florida has a variety of distances you can run during the weekend both timed races and races just for fun, and we selected the half marathon as the second part of our Treasured Chest Challenge (running the Donna Half Marathon and the Gasparilla Half Marathon).  It was a hot and humid day.  I’m not gonna lie to you.  I finished the race very slowly and it was HOT and HUMID.  I made the mistake of not hydrating enough before the race or during, so I suffered afterward, so much so that I almost had to skip the eating and drinking portion of our podcast.  But I rallied back to feature a couple of great places.

EAT

A place to celebrate our accomplishment? Kojak’s House of Ribs.  A South Tampa staple since 1978 and a recommendation coming directly from my camera man, who was born and raised there, Kojak’s ribs are a must when in Tampa.

DRINK

We headed to Tampa Bay Brewing Company to try a flight of locally brewed beer.  TBBC is in the heart of Ybor City in Tampa, which has a lot of interesting hot spots.  What did we drink to celebrate the completion of our Treasured Chest Challenge?  A flight, of course!

RED Episode #20: Donna Half Marathon, Black Sheep, and Intuition Ale Works in Jacksonville

RUN

The Donna Marathon Weekend continued on Sunday.  We signed up for the Booby Trap Challenge.  That means we were scheduled to run a 10K and a 5K on Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday (or runners can choose to do the full marathon instead of the half as a part of their Booby Trap Challenge).  The Half and Full Marathons are run at the same time, with a 7-hour time limit on the course for both races.  The spectators make this race, cheering us on with hilarious signs, offering beer, mimosas, doughnuts, and more.  The fellow runners motivating each other are inspiring.  The feeling of this half or full marathon is something everyone must experience.

EAT

A place to celebrate our accomplishment? Black Sheep in the historic Five Points District of Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood.  They are focused on creating delicious dishes using local ingredients.  We took time to talk with Executive Chef Waylon Rivers about what makes this restaurant special and then we sampled an amazing pasta dish, Spaghetti a'la Chitarra.  Winter squash, pecorino, garlic, sage, rosemary, and sunflower seeds make this a mouthwatering must have!

DRINK

Intiuition Ale Works is a great brewery in Jacksonville.  We got the inside scoop from Bronson Olympia, a Tap Room Manager there.  (They also serve appetizers, small plates, and sandwiches from Black Sheep!)  We recommend the Jon Boat Coastal Ale as a lighter brew perfect for a hot day or our personal favorite, the Underdark is an Imperial  / Double Stout that is aged in Willet Rye Barrels for a year and only released in February.  So lucky we were there!

RED Episode #18: Off the Road Again

Special thanks to our sponsor, Health I.Q.!  Health I.Q. celebrates the healthy choices people make by helping them find lower rates on life insurance.  If you are a weightlifter, swimmer, yogi, runner, or cyclist, you could get rewarded for the healthy lifestyle you are living.  For more information and to see if you qualify, go to www.healthiq.com/red or mention the promo code RED when you talk to a Health I.Q. agent at 1 (800) 549-1664.  A big thank you to them for sponsoring this week's show.

RUN

In this episode we show you what we do when we are off the road and training for upcoming races.  During the week, there are strength training, yoga, swimming, and running days.  This happens to be a day when we practice cadence drills.  A running drill in Jeff Galloway's training programs at www.jeffgalloway.com, this drill helps you create quick turnover during run-walk-run intervals.

EAT

No, this week we are not indulging.  We make spring rolls, which are a low-calorie snack or lunch option.

These spring rolls include:

Rice Paper Wrappers

Steamed Shrimp

Sliced Red Bell Pepper

Pre-Shredded Carrot

Sliced Hot House Cucumbers soaked in Rice Vinegar

Sliced Jalapeno

Cilantro Leaves

That is what was in our version, which was inspired by this recipe from Food Network .

DRINK

This week, instead of a cocktail or craft beer, we show you what we do to jazz up water to keep us hydrated.  We add fruit to our water and often use no sodium sparkling water to vary up our beverages.  To have more fun, we put the water in these Star Wars tikis from ThinkGeek.
