RED Episode # 79: Mike Bankhead from the Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards Running Facebook Group

WE RUN, EAT, and DRINK DISNEY on THIS WEEK’S SHOW!

This week we share your listener feedback about keeping training enjoyable when it gets tough.  Thank you to everyone who sent in a tip, trick, or suggestion!

On this episode, we got to test out our really great audio equipment and talk to a special guest.  When things get tough in your training season, it is important to be part of a training group or online group that understands and can provide support and advice.  The Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards FaceBook group is one of the best.  It was born out of the Be Our Guest Podcast, which is a fantastic podcast about all things Disney (Shout out to Mike, Pam, and Rikki!).  The Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards group on FaceBook started because of a love for all things RunDisney, but members also support each other in all running endeavors and races.

We are sharing our interview with Mike Bankhead, who created the Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards running group on Facebook almost six years ago!  It is almost 2000 members strong.  Mike talks about his journey with running, creating the group, and shares his tips and tricks for a Disney runcation or vacation!  He emphasizes that this group has forged very special friendships and members who cheer each other on have become like family to each other.  He also shares his favorite places to stay and where to eat after you have run off all those calories!

He also shared great resources like The Magic for Less Travel, to help you book a magical Disney vacation and The Mouse for Less, which is the blog that Rikki, co-host of the Be Our Guest Podcast along with Mike Rahlmann, helps to maintain and that gives you tips, tricks, information, and great resources about Disney, too!

RED Episode #76: Anchorage RunFest Recap Part 1, Moose’s Tooth, and Matanuska Brewpub

RUN

Welcome to Anchorage RunFest! This week, we recap Saturday’s events on our trip, including the Expo and the Anchorage Mile.  The Anchorage Mile events included a Women’s, Men’s, Military, and Community Mile that went off throughout the morning.  We had a great time running the flat course that looped 1.5 times around a great park where an outdoor post-race event was held with tents setup with games for kids, a truck serving coffee, post-race pizza, and hunting safety tips tent was set up.    Then we got the honor and privilege to hear Bart Yasso, Jeff Galloway, and World Record Holder for Double Amputees in the Marathon, Marko Cheseto motivate us and provide us with wisdom ahead of the longer races on Sunday.  Such great events to start the weekend off right!  We will recap our half marathon experience on next week’s episode, so stay tuned for more about this awesome weekend.

EAT

Moose’s Tooth boasts the best pizza and beer in town.  It did not disappoint!  We arrived to find there was a wait.  It is not on Open Table, so be prepared to wait, but good news... there is an outdoor deck with a waiting area around a fire pit and beer from Broken Tooth Brewing.  We will recap the beers in a later episode.  But, that pizza was amazing!  We got a large so we could try two different kinds from the menu.  The Call of the Wild included Reindeer sausage!  The Brewhouse Favorite had chorizo sausage and Denali sauce, which is a unique ricotta-based white sauce with herbs and spices.  Crust was a thicker New York-style crust.  The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly and the view from the outdoor patio where we ate was incredible.  You gotta stop by!

DRINK

Matanuska Brewpub in downtown Anchorage was only a few steps from our hotel!  Matanuska Brewing Company actually brews their beer in Palmer, but has several Brewpub locations in Eagle River and in Anchorage.  We tried a variety of their beers and were really pleased with their selection.  There is something for everyone from an IPA lover to someone who loves a fruit beer, and as you know, we love places like that.  They have a menu and, the sandwiches that came out looked amazing.  We would have gone back for the sandwiches, but we ran out of time!! 😞

THAT’S A WRAP

Stay tuned for more from the Anchorage RunFest including our recap of the half marathon and more great places to eat and drink as you celebrate your accomplishment.

RED Episode #66: Your Virtual Race Feedback and a Tough Speed Workout, Hunger Station, and Big Storm’s Category 1 Belgian Single Release

RUN

As we have said before, we are following Jeff Galloway’s training plan to prepare for our half marathon at the Anchorage RunFest in August.  We are e-coaching clients of his and this week, instead of a long run, we were working on half miles and trying to hit a target in a certain time.  We did 6 half miles, but the heat and humidity in Florida is really a challenge at this time of year and we made the mistake of starting a bit too late in the morning.  We did pour ice water over our heads, as Jeff suggested, and it did help, but while the mileage was around the times that Jeff wanted us to hit, I was slow this week, and I am still a work in progress.  I am sure the work with Cadence Drills, Acceleration Gliders, and quarter and half miles along with the long runs will get us there.  So my lesson in all of this is:  don’t get frustrated with short-term setbacks, and start earlier in the morning because it is a Florida summer after all.

EAT

Since this was a training week, we decided to try a new food truck that was making its debut at No. 3 Craft Brews, Hunger Station.  It was some great Mediterranean food.  We had Shawarma Fries with a garlic aioli and Falafel Wraps with spicy red sauce.  We really wanted the grape leaves but they were out by the time we got to them.  But they will be back and making more appearances around Southwest Florida.  So, if you love Mediterranean food, you should check them out.  They were so nice and let us try samples of the Shawarma while we tried to decide what to order because everything looked and smelled great.  They are a fairly new food truck.  We can’t wait for them to get their food truck decked out with their logo so we can easily spot them at No. 3 or wherever they might be to snag the grape leaves!

DRINK

Big Storm Brewing Company has a series of beer dedicated to making the best of hurricane season and their release schedule starts on the first day of that season.  We had a live beer chat dedicated to trying Category 1 Belgian Single, which is their first release.  We talk about it on this episode as well.  It has a nice yellow body and it is a bit cloudy.  It reminds us of a Hoegaarden with its banana and clove notes, but we get more clove than banana out of this one.  I think it is on the higher end of sessionable beers.
