RED Episode #60: The Boston Marathon, Schnitzel Express Food Truck, and No. 3 Craft Brews

RUN

We watched the 123rd Boston Marathon on Monday.  It brought many amazing stories.  We talk about everything from Des Linden returning to Boston a year after her victory in some tough conditions to Joan Benoit Samuelson’s run 40 years after her historic victory on the course in 1979.  Runs like this as well as the New York City Marathon inspire us as back-of-the-back runners to work harder towards our own goals.

EAT

No. 3 Craft Brews plays host to Schnitzel Express food truck every Monday night.  We happened to be off on this Monday night, so we decided to try it. Wiener Schnitzel is a pork cutlet breaded and fried.  Theirs is served with roasted potatoes.  The Hunter Schnitzel was pork served with a mushroom sauce.  It was tender pork and crispy breading.  The potatoes reminded me of au gratin style potatoes, but without the cheese sauce.  They were soft and buttery.  All-in-all, this food truck does Pork Schnitzel right!

DRINK

We headed to No. 3 Craft Brews to sample the food truck but also because we know that they have a variety of brews on tap from IPAs to brown ales, we can always find something to toast a night off with and No. 3 Craft Brews did not disappoint this time.  I had I’m Fine from Red Cypress Brewery, which was a 4.6% ABV Sour Gose with key limes, oranges, and pink Himalayan salt.  It was different than what I’d normally choose, but it was light, refreshing, and tart and went with the pork well.  Dana had Dressed in Black by Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company.  It is a medium-bodied sweet stout at 6% ABV.  Two very different beers,  but both are tasty brews.

RED Episode #54: Mebisode at 2019 Gasparilla Distance Classic

At Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend, yes we ran a half marathon, but we also got to catch up with a very special guest...Meb Keflezighi!

He is the only man to win the New York City Marathon (2009), an Olympic Silver Medal (Athens 2004), and the Boston Marathon (2014).  We were so lucky to interview him before our race back in 2018 at Gasparilla, but Liam from Hawi Management arranged for us to have a few minutes with a very busy Meb Keflezighi to talk about his new book, 26 Marathons: What I Learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career.  Thank you, Liam!  It comes out on March 19th and we have to say that we have already pre-ordered it and can’t wait to read it and listen to the audiobook on our next long run after its release!

Meb is such a humble and genuine man. He has gone through so much adversity in his life and turned it into success.  He knows so much more than how to win, train for, and complete distance races.  He knows the importance of family and community.  He is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and this latest book is only one way he does just that.  He supports other runners, no matter their level, and gives back to the sport endlessly.  He even spent time telling us about a couple of races he is involved in coming up in California that give anyone a chance to accomplish, explore, and indulge. I hope we get to do them soon!

We thank Meb for the precious time we spent talking about these life lessons from the book as well as what he has on the horizon this year.  We know from our talk that this book is not just for runners, but a book for anyone who is looking to be successful in the marathon of life.

RED Episode #33: Freedom 5K and Gather in Cape Coral

RUN

It's 4th of July! Happy Independence Day to the United States of America!  We ran the Freedom 5K sponsored by the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce in our hometown to celebrate.  It was the first time we ever ran this 5K.  Be prepared for hills if you run this one!  You traverse the Cape Coral Bridge twice and part of an overpass in Fort Myers.  But it is a great view and watching the sunrise over the water while running to celebrate July 4th is an aamzing way to start the day.  Just a pro tip:  Try to do packet pickup prior to race day as lines the morning of the race can be a bit long.  Parking is also at a premium, so we recommend getting there as early as possible.  We tried to get there an hour before the race in order to find parking (about a half mile away from the start) and pick up bibs.

EAT

We went to a newer restaurant in Cape Coral to have some post-race brunch. Gather is nestled in Tarpon Point at the Westin Resort in Cape Coral.  The view of the water as you eat and drink here is beautiful.  We had a pancake and corned beef and hash.  It was mouthwatering goodness all the way to the last bite!

DRINK

Gather always has local beer on tap. Scotty's Bierwerks is right in Cape Coral.  They make a Hefe that is light, not hoppy and not overly carbonated.  With a low ABV and subtle flavors of coriander and orange, it was a perfect post-run beer.
