RED EPISODE #56: LAST WEEK OF TRAINING BEFORE BLUEGRASS, CELEBRATING A NINJA, & RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RUN THE BLUEGRASS

Welcome to our second official audio episode of the Run Eat Drink Podcast!

RUN

This week, we are still at home training for our next big race!  We are excited to get to Run the Bluegrass at the end of this month in Lexington, Kentucky.  Jeff Galloway assigned us cadence drills, acceleration gliders, and quarter miles to hit in a certain target time this week.

We also saw some posts on social media this week about DNFs (Did Not Finish) at races.  Most of the time, having been one who has had a DNF, it is really hard to talk about or even admit to friends and family.  I consider it brave to talk about it, it is also courageous to take yourself out of the race to avoid further injury, and I feel like it is a great motivator for getting healthy and training for a comeback, having had a great comeback in 2018 at the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend.

EAT

Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery is a place we talked about last week. Shannon Yates, owner and chef, put together a fundraiser for Morgan Wright, or Morgan the Moose, our local celebrity from American Ninja Warrior, as he headed to Atlanta to compete in and film his episodes for ANW Season 11!  I know we talked about running into Morgan last week, but this week, we were able to get to his fundraiser at Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery and do a live interview with him.  That meant we got to have awesome fried chicken and fish and chips that Shannon made for his fundraiser.  So tasty!

DRINK

Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery also offered us the chance to get Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale by Lexington Brewing Company in order to get ready for our trip.  It was a wonderful beer full of caramel and vanilla notes, but not too sweet, so it could stand up to the delicious food.  Apparently, Lexington Brewing Company will be 10-15 minutes away from where we are staying for the race this weekend.  I hope we get to tour the brewery!  Rumor has it they also have a distillery.

RED Episode 55: THE SAINT PATRICK’S DAY EPISODE! Training for Run the Bluegrass & Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery

Welcome to our first official audio episode of the Run Eat Drink Podcast!

RUN

This week, we are off the road and training for our next big race!  We are excited to get to Run the Bluegrass at the end of this month in Lexington, Kentucky.  Jeff Galloway is our coach and he has assigned us a long run of 15 miles.  We talk about why.

EAT

We had a Saint Patrick’s Day pre-party the night before our run at  Nice Guys Pizza with their Ruben Pizza, which was amazing.  After completing our 15-miler, we needed celebratory food, of course! Our post-run food was from another favorite place, Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery. Shannon Yates, owner and chef, was putting together killer Corned Beef and Cabbage, and with a little twist that makes it unique and tasty.  And as a bonus, we ran into Morgan Wright, or Morgan the Moose, our local celebrity from American Ninja Warrior, so we were able to wish him good luck as he heads to Atlanta for ANW Season 11!

DRINK

Nevermind Awesome Bar and Eatery collaborated with Big Top Brewing in Sarasota to create Shamrock Shannon Stout.  This was a great way to celebrate completing the 15 miles.  Why?  It is smooth, not bitter, and it has been aged in Tullamore Dew barrels!

RED Episode #38: Joggin’ for Frogmen 5K and “Bourbon & Beyond”

Welcome to Louisville, Kentucky! We are here to run a race that supports the Navy Seals Foundation and attend the Bourbon and Beyond Festival!

RUN

In this episode, we run the Joggin for Frogmen 5K to benefit the Navy Seals Foundation on Saturday. It was at South Oldham High School in Crestwood, not too far outside Louisville.  The weather was awesome and the course was almost entirely on the high school campus.  It was mainly flat and it is an inexpensive race that everyone can run or walk and feel inspired knowing they are supporting a great cause.  We talk to the media manager for the event, Steve Watkins, who is also a former Navy Seal, and he tells us about the foundation and what it does for families of Navy Seals as well as Navy Seals themselves.

EAT

We got to the Bourbon and Beyond Festival on the first day with a plan to research and prepare to film our food segments on the second day of the festival.  We saw lots of local eats and we talked to several people at many booths.  We were exited.  I can tell you Island Noodles were tasty... we wish we had filmed some segments on Saturday.

DRINK

We tried many cocktails as part of the Jefferson’s Reserve VIP Lounge Area.  The Jefferson’s Airplane was a great cocktail that was part of our VIP experience.  The Old Fashioned they made us was also awesome.  We wanted to bring you so many of the offerings from the local distilleries as well.    We should have filmed everything we tried that day because....

THE WEATHER HAD OTHER PLANS...

It started raining like cats and dogs and we took shelter as we watched great musical acts like Keb Mo’ Sheryl Crow, and Lenny Kravitz.

At the end of the night, we made our way to get picked up at the Uber / Lyft shared ride location.  It was ankle-deep mud because of the rain and it was difficult for many to exit the park.  The city declared the park unsafe and canceled day two. We understood.  Safety is always the top priority.

We also knew we had to change course so we could bring you some of what Louisville has to offer should you come here to run a race or visit for an awesome vacation.

We decided to go on a couple of distillery tours and to a couple of restaurants, so we will bring you those in future Quick Bites.

Thank you for hanging in there with us, even though plans changed in the interest of safety for everyone.
