RED Episode 266 Bird-In-Hand Runcation Recap with Chris Darling, Loveable Extra Miler and Member of the Runcation Nation

SHOUT OUTS

Thanks to all our patrons and everyone in the Runcation Nation for your support and encouragement.  Because of you, we have been able to keep the show going over the last two years, and now that the races are returning, we look forward to meeting up with you, too!

We received a shoutout from Judy Gerber for Linda Myers this week!  She says, “Shout out to my sister-in-law Linda Myers doing her first half marathon at Wine and Dine this weekend.  💪🏻”.  Way to go, Linda!  We were cheering you on virtually, too!

Special happy birthday wishes go to patron Darlene, as we missed her birthday on October 23.  We hope you are feeling better, Darlene, and we are sorry you had to miss Wine and Dine this weekend!

Good luck to everyone in the Runcation Nation running any race this weekend!  This includes Dean and Judy Gerber, Jenn (@runningthruwonderland), and the Rise and Run Podcast Crew!  We are not sure who else is running it this weekend, but we can’t wait to get back to it in 2024!

Happy birthday to my co-host on November 7th!  Dana, I love you so much, and I am so lucky to have you as my fellow podcaster and husband.  I am so proud of all you have accomplished in your career, too!

RUN

This week, we talked with Runcation Nation member Chris Darling.  He recaps an excellent race weekend that has been on our bucket list for years now, and we are targeting 2024 to run this one after hearing how amazing it is from him.  It is the Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon Weekend in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Chris gives excellent travel tips and breaks down the weather (ring that bell!), packet pick-up, the evening 5K, and the half marathon of the weekend.  He offers tips for making it a true “runcation” after the running and lets us know about places to explore, indulge, and celebrate your accomplishment in more ways than eating and drinking the local fare.

Find out more and register for the 2024 edition of this race at https://www.bihhalfmarathon.com/

EAT

Despite having to leave right after running the race, Chris did have excellent recommendations for food in Lancaster.  Stay for the BBQ after the race, even if you are part of a cheer squad supporting a fellow runner or family member, because all are welcome!  Potato salad and real-deal BBQ meats plus dessert like Shoofly Pie abound at this unique post-race party.

DRINK

There is also a local spot that Chris talked about called Plain and Fancy that features tasty BBQ and Brews.

Smokehouse BBQ and Brews:  https://www.smokehousebbqandbrews.com/

This place touts local brews on tap in every style, including the Evil Genius Adulting Guava IPA, WYNDRIDGE FARM CIDERY BLACK CHERRY CIDER, and EVIL GENIUS I LOVE LAMP HEFEWEIZEN.  Can’t choose?  There are beer flights, too.  If you want to try local wines, selections like CHADDSFORD SUNSET BLUSH, WALTZ CELLAR 1599, MOSCATO WALTZ, and OLD LINE CHARDONNAY.  If creative cocktails interest you, there are plenty,  including the Pear Pressure and Backroads Bourbon, that sound sweet, smoky, and sinful!  Of course, there are non-alcoholic drinks, too, including Lancaster Coffee Roasters coffee!
